Luo Land Happenings...

"Everyone smiles in the same Language."  That's a quote I like and I find it to be very true.  There are times that the language barrier is discouraging to me but I find that most everyone responds to a smile.  We can be a blessing and ease someone's load by smiling to show them that we care.  I love the way people wave and greet each other in this culture.  A handshake is VERY important and even the very young children who can't walk are taught to shake hands.

Its been a good week in Kisumu.  On Monday morning I was a bit nervous about taking beans and chapatis to the pastor's meeting because I had never made the soupy beans like they are used to eating on the first Monday of every month.  But I got Marji to come over and taste them for me and she gave her approval on the taste and Wayne liked them, so I guess they were a success. :)  Bradlyn and Jerolin (Marlins) and I walked down to a little duka close to Ring Rd. to buy the chapatis.  The lady wasn't finished with our order when we got there so we stood there and watched her while she finished them.  Its amazing how fast they can make them on a small jiko.  Some neighbor children gathered around us as we stood there and talked a bit.  A lot of times the children know English better than the adults.  I guess they learn it at school.

Wayne didn't do a lot of visiting this week besides at Bible study on Wed.  because it didn't suit the church brothers to go along to be his translator.  He did go out to Wellington and Benter's house one day when he found out that one of the daughter's had been hit on the head by a rock.  She was doing better when Wayne got there and the Dr. had prescribed antibiotics.  The girl was at church this morning and I gave her some antibiotic salve to put on the spot since it is still oozing.

I was extra busy this week because of the joint unit meeting which was planned for Thursday.  Janice and I were responsible to make hot food for close to 90 people.  We decided to make a tortilla casserole with meat, beans, rice, and a cheese sauce.  Thankfully it turned out well I think except for the fact that we made way too much.  It was a pleasant day to be outside.  The large tent was set up in Tommy's lawn under shade trees, which really helped with the heat!!  We enjoyed our day with the Nakuru folks and the meeting went well.  Some of the girls were in charge of babysitting over at the school, so that really helps keep the noise level down.

On Saturday we decided to do something special as a family.  We didn't give our children much for Christmas but we told them that sometime we would take them to Impala Park.  So off we went... down beside Lake Victoria, just a few kilometers from our house.  Because of the fact that Wayne has his aliens card now, we were able to enter the park for only $15 for the whole family.  We enjoyed ourselves immensely.  Impala Park is a beautiful, quiet, peaceful place where you can sit to relax and enjoy the scenery, the lake, and the animals. There are zebra's roaming around freely, as well as monkeys, and impala, turtles, etc.  There are cheetahs in cages (even some tame ones that you can pet!)  Also African buffalo, baboons, ostrich's, huge lions, a giraffe, etc.  We loved it and hope we can go again sometime!!  Hard to believe that place is so close home!!

Church this morning was a bit empty.  Not sure where everyone was.... but we enjoyed the service anyway.  Wayne preached about the Scripture "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted."  We were glad for our visitors which included a young man from Oroba who shared with us in a devotional.  He also told us about the fighting that is going on right now in Oroba between the Luos and the Nandis.  I think the fight is over cattle and at least 6 people have been killed. :(  Other visitors this morning were Carolyn' two brothers from America, Elmer and Ethan.  We enjoyed having them join us for lunch after Church.

Wayne is making bread sticks right now and we invited Dean Millers over to share them with us this eve.  I better go see how I can be of assistance. :)  God bless all of you with a good week!  Clara

Here's my quote of the week, "Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at things in life that don't really matter"

Thank you for your prayers!  Wayne
